Italy’s solar energy sector is flourishing, with the latest report from ItaliaSolare revealing a remarkable installation increase in the first half of 2024. The nation added a staggering 3.34GW of new photovoltaic capacity, nearly doubling the 2.3GW installed in the same period of 2023. By the end of June, Italy’s cumulative solar power capacity reached an impressive 33.62GW.
The surge in installations is attributed to various sectors, with 29% (985MW) stemming from private residential solar systems under 20kW and 35% (1155MW) from commercial and industrial (C&I) systems ranging from 20kW to 200kW. A significant 36% (1201MW) came from utility-scale plants over 1MW, including 17 large-scale facilities exceeding 10MW, totaling 540MW.
“The data indicates that the utility sector is finally gaining momentum, with the licenses granted progressively materializing into plants that are built and connected to the grid,” said Paolo Rocco Viscontini, President of ItaliaSolare.
The connection of plants in the 1 to 10MW range saw robust growth, expanding by 122% from 297MW in H1 2023 to 661MW in H1 2024. Six regions—Lombardy, Lazio, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, and Sardinia—accounted for 63% of the new installed capacity this year, with Lombardy leading at 554MW, followed by Lazio at 426MW, and Veneto at 329MW.
“In these regions, a total of 2.11GW of power was grid-connected in the first half of 2024, with 24% (515MW) in the private sector, 34% (717MW) in the C&I sector, and 42% (880MW) in the utility-scale segment,” the association stated.
